Is aerial yoga suitable for beginners? It’s a HELL YES from us!
We've been running weekly aerial yoga classes at our Clitheroe studio for a while now and it's a fun and empowering workout you can adapt for every ability.
In our latest blog, we'll be delving into more detail about why aerial yoga is a fantastic full body practice for all and how you can get started.
What is aerial yoga?
First things first, let's explain what we're actually talking about.
Aerial yoga has been around for a while now and become super popular in recent years.
It's very different to a more traditional yoga practice you may have experienced on the mat, with the small matter of doing it all in mid-air!
So what does that mean?
Basically, you'll be doing various postures, some you’re familiar with & some you're not so familiar with both on and off the ground using in an aerial hammock suspended from the ceiling.
The hammock supports your body weight, giving you the freedom to glide into a posture and even try out more challenging postures that you might not attempt on the mat.
It also eases the pressure on your knees and it’s damn good fun!
Not to mention a fabulous way to build your confidence and boost your mental health - we challenge you not to leave the studio with a huge smile on your face!
What makes it suitable for beginners?
As we mentioned above, we use the hammock both on the mat as a prop to support our balance and being suspended in the air actually makes it a lot easier to get into certain yoga poses.
Plus, as you're supported by the hammock, it’s like you have someone holding you & being there to stop you from falling whilst essentially encouraging you to move deeper into a shape.
Like most types of yoga, there are modifications available for every posture to accommodate beginners and more seasoned yogis, so do not fear if you are unable to do something our fabulous teacher will always be able to help you.
What are the benefits of aerial yoga?
You don't just look like a graceful acrobat as you glide through your aerial yoga postures - there are actually lots of mind and body benefits to this form of exercise.
Advantages include:
Builds core strength and stability by engaging multiple muscle groups at the same time
Improves balance and coordination through dynamic movements
Helps to decompress the spine, easing back pain
Increases blood circulation and lymphatic flow, promoting overall health and wellbeing
Encourages mindfulness and mental clarity
It's a childlike kind of fun - keeping your practice fresh and exciting
Allows you to achieve deeper stretches, boosting your flexibility and range of motion
Improves joint mobility and reduces stiffness so you feel more comfortable and capable
Supports better body awareness
Adaptable for all fitness levels - making it a great low impact exercise for beginners and a fun challenge for seasoned aerial yoga enthusiasts!
Is aerial yoga scary??
One of the questions we get asked the most!
And although it might sound like a scary prospect to dangle mid-air, we promise you it sounds a lot more daunting than it actually is!
Plus, the class sizes are smaller because we only have a certain number of hammocks and need more space per person, so you receive more attention from your teacher which our yogis find reassuring and empowering.
The best way to find out if aerial yoga is for you is to take the plunge and participate in one of our weekly classes - and trust us that it will likely become your new favourite hobby!
Our aerial yoga teacher, Anatasia, is highly experienced - she's been practising for ten years and has perfected her craft training and teaching aerial arts (both aerial hoop and silks).
So, she's the ideal instructor to introduce you to aerial yoga life, guide you to see visible progress in your practice and ensure your alignment is tip top to prevent injuries and help you get the most from your time in the air.
